As you are likely aware, there is a growing need for businesses to take a more active role in addressing societal issues. Stakeholders expect those they do business with to be making progress with respect to Social Impact, Sustainability, Carbon Footprint, etc. This expectation extends beyond the four-walls of your own business to include businesses in your vendor/supply chain.

We have a Working Group focused on Diversity & Inclusion – a key component of Corporate Social Impact programs -  and in addition, in 2020 we launched a Working Group focused on Social Impact and Sustainability. It is co-chaired by Pamela Cone, Founder and CEO of Amity Advisory, a social impact and sustainability consultancy to the legal industry, and Orazio Difruscolo, Head Claims Legal Sourcing at Swiss Re. You may remember both of them as speakers at the 2019 BLC Conferences.

Here are example of topics the Working Group is planning to address:

What is the role of the legal industry in addressing these issues? How does a company’s/firm’s behavior influence the buying decision? What steps should procurement take to help influence the behavior of its vendors / suppliers, including law firms?

The objectives of the Working Group are:

        • Enhance buyers’ and sellers’ understanding of social impact and sustainability issues in the legal industry
        • Provide tangible, actionable solutions for improving social Impact in the legal space, including value creation with suppliers/vendors
        • Create a more collaborative and purposeful approach to Social Impact and Sustainability initiatives in the legal industry

Who can join?

If you are a Member or a Friend of the Buying Legal Council and passionate about Social Impact and Sustainability, we want you!

What are we planning for 2020?

In large part, the 2020 agenda will be determined by the Working Group members. A few ideas might include:

        • Educational webinars on Social Impact / Sustainability
        • Educational Social Impact / Sustainability session at BLC conferences
        • The creation of a legal industry primer with checklists, tools, and actionable take-aways for procurers of legal services
        • What does “good” look like when it comes to law firms’ Social Impact and Sustainability programs?

We plan to meet (virtually) every 4-6 weeks for brainstorming discussions and before events as needed.

Why join our Social Impact and Sustainability working group?

        • You will get a platform to pursue your interest
        • You can give back to the community
        • You will network with your peers
        • You will grow professionally and personally

AND, it will be FUN and very timely. Clearly, this is an emerging issue for all businesses.
